Learn/Earn/Relearn with University of Washington
A fascinating deep dive into how humanity is (or isn’t) preparing for longer futures and very different career paths, thanks to technology. The hosts and guests are very smart, academic people engaged in a lot of Olympic-level thinking, which ordinarily would mean having to wrestle with keeping conversations lay-person-friendly. Fortunately our hosts are gifted educators with the University of Washington, and that, in addition to them being genuinely curious and excited about the topic matter, kept the conversation lively and very consumable. Great conversations — and so many great resources mentioned to follow up! Learn more.
Learning for a Lifetime with University of Washington
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is a program that knows people don’t stop being curious and wanting to learn just because they’ve left traditional education. And the OLLI program at the University of Washington is one of the best. The challenge with OLLI-UW has been prioritizing all the amazing content they generate: lectures, discussions with instructors, conversations about courses and OLLI members — it’s all wonderful and worthy. We’ve been working very closely with the Director of OLLI-UW Natalie Lecher to help advise on how to make visual presentations work in an audio medium and other challenges, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be involved in this amazing project! Conversations of Grief and Growth
Wendy Sloneker is an Emergence Coach who helps people deal with grief and change and emotional overloads of all kinds and at all stages. Despite challenging subject matter, Wendy herself is unflaggingly positive, and she wanted a podcast that reflected her focus on the healing and not just the loss. Her gorgeous artwork, plus upbeat music and attention on Wendy’s soothing voice and deep insights, invites both the griever and the curious to learn more. Wendy takes a much broader look at tough emotions — the many sources of them, the ways we avoid tackling them head-on, and the paths to recovery. Learn more.
Microsoft Management
Media, like other industries, is a landscape changing so rapidly, even the experts need a travel guide. Hosts Simon Crownshaw and Andy Beach are guides who are also filling in the map as they go. On-demand streaming services, AI, consumer demands for a more tailored experiences have providers struggling to keep up. And that struggle was reflected in frequent changes to the content calendar as the conversation evolved. Trying to balance being timely with news and providing information that wasn’t immediately obsolete was a challenge; extrapolating future scenarios from current conditions and reflecting on how media has dealt with sweeping challenges before helped keep content evergreen. Audiotocracy, in partnership with Connected Marketing, were tasked with helping create this new podcast property for Microsoft. Listen here.
Busting Infertility Stigma and Myths
Dr. Lora Shahine is an amazing resource for people on a fertility journey. She brings not only years of medical practice but also her own experience, a gentle touch, and a terrific sense of humor to the table. In her podcast, we wanted listeners to enjoy both her wisdom and her amazing “bedside manner,” so there are both interviews with subject matter experts but also solo episodes where she can dazzle us with her own expertise and charm. And a jazzy music piece underscores (pun intended) her humor and willingness to take on difficult topics with sensitivity plus a hint of irreverence. Listen here.
Philanthropy Masterclass
Musings is the podcast arm of The Life You Can Save — an organization that helps contributors determine where to direct their charitable giving. The 501c3 came about thanks to co-founder Charlie Bresler’s struggle with wanting to “do good” but also to “live well” and the inevitable guilt that came with enjoying a few luxuries while others didn’t have enough. In this podcast, Charlie asks some uncomfortable questions of himself and others, including about the morality of living well when others are struggling to simply live. Aimed at an audience of people with enough “extra” to give considerable sums, it’s a fascinating balancing act of eliciting more philanthropy but not adding to guilt. Listen here.
Health and Fertility
There are few subjects more sensitive than fertility, but the Nurse Practitioners and fertility specialists who host this podcast do so with grace, compassion, humor, and care. Anne Judge and Ruby Booras of Seattle Reproductive Medicine tackle issues of human reproduction from a completely holistic angle, addressing physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, and at Audiotocracy, we’ve taken care to reflect the light and positive tone in our production decisions. Major points of discussion have been inclusion, respect, and being sure everyone feels welcome to the conversation: including men, LGBTQ+, NB and trans folx, and everyone who is looking to learn more. Listen and Learn
When realtor and business owner Jennifer Nelson came to us, she had an unusual idea: build a podcast that professionals in the real estate industry could use to earn professional continuing-education credits. Because of her expertise and that of the guests she was proposing to interview, getting accreditation was actually pretty simple. We work closely with Jennifer to ensure the content and quality stay within the prescribed boundaries, and having watched a few too many “CE” videos ourselves, we were thrilled to help produce podcasts that not only meet the state criteria but also are genuinely entertaining and contain actionable ideas. Check it out on Spotify.
Home Away from Home
One of the interesting challenges for Caroline Giffon’s Love Your Expat Life podcast was signaling to her literally global target audience that this podcast was for them. Caroline’s teachings about emotion and identity can apply to us all, but she tailors them for an expat audience, so we made sure expats could recognize their experiences, frustrations, and stories in the content. She expanded her repertoire to include one-on-one interviews as well as scripted content and quickly became as adept an interviewer as she is a teacher. Note: we worked with Caroline through early June of 2022.
COVID & the Ethiopian Immigrant Community
This 8-episode series was an amazing project, start to finish. It involved recording and editing speakers in three different languages, recording in three different places of worship, working with a video team to share audio tracks and equipment, and working around the realities of COVID ourselves. This was also a real lesson in cultural sensitivity in dress, in respectful recording practices, even in working with interpreted audio from a respected faith leader. It was an honor to work with the Tesfa program, and we’re thrilled to give them a platform to extend their reach and message.
Work and the World
The chemistry between the two hosts is pretty obvious — as it should be, since they’ve been married for more than a dozen years — and the conversation flows as easily as you might expect. Happily, Holli and Casey Margell are also gracious hosts who leave plenty of opportunity and space for their guests to shine. Their focus on the often weird world of work is a sideways take on what many of us consider the least interesting part of our lives — our jobs. How did we get where we are? Did we make conscious choices, or go with the flow? How do we define “success,” and what are the signs it’s time for a change? If you’re “career curious,” listen here! Note: we worked with the Margells through episode 6, after which they went DIY!
Re-branding Menopause
If you stand still and listen, you can hear taboos crashing all around you, but one of the last to tumble is menopause. With its focus on aging women (gasp!), it’s hardly a topic for general discussion. But Gennev CEO Jill Angelo is redefining menopause with a fresh voice and attitude (and people of all genders invited to the discussion), and this podcast is a celebration of those who have/are/will experience menopause and their strength and achievements.
